Back in the day, I was an elementary school teacher, so the month of August arrives with a fierce craving to round up school supplies, sharpen pencils and basically just get my calendar and desk organized! There is just nothing like the smell of a new box of crayons and a simple cardboard school box makes my heart skip a beat. It's in my blood you know, not only was my mama a school teacher but so was my Grandmother, so I come by this "disorder" genetically!
The family gene for all things back to school was definitely passed on to the Squirrel Girl and even her brother. She loved color coordinating and color coding her notebooks and folders and had every gel pen imaginable. A new lunchbox was always necessary as was a bottle of Elmer's glue, never mind that it returned home completely full at the end of the year. At some point an organizing agenda became mandatory and still is to this day. A girl after my own heart!
Of course the whole "back to college" thing was next level. I see those commercials on TV where the parents stand at the edge of the driveway and wave goodbye to their teenager as he drives off to university. He finds a parking spot right next to his dorm and unloads one suitcase, one lightweight moving box and an empty laundry basket. Really? When Squirrel Girl and her brother went to college, we took three car loads, the grandparents, and made a half dozen trips to Walmart and Target to fill in the gaps! Parking was a nightmare and it took several days and all hands on deck to get everything just right.
These days there is no need for a whole afternoon devoted to Trapper Keepers, rulers, or Walmart dorm organizers but I still love a few things to celebrate "back to school season." A fresh pack of pencils, pretty ones that look nice on my desktop, a new notebook for fresh ideas and a stash of decorative file folders sooth a deep yearning inside. Come to think of it, I might just need a fresh bottle of glue, I think mine is all dried up. Oh yeah, and some graph paper - I LOVE graph paper - and highlighters and what about...maybe this is a "disorder," thanks Mom!
