Every month we will be featuring one of our local makers to not only highlight their work but to provide a little more information on them so you can learn more about their story and love them just as much as we do! We will also be including a note from Rachael telling us why she picked each maker for the store and why she loves their work! This month we decided to feature one of our favorite artists in the store, Shelby Dillon!
We currently have 3 pieces of original art from Shelby and some of her new floral prints in store!
Friday Feature Questionnaire:
Q: Where are you from?
A: I'm from HHI,SC. Once you get sand in your shoes you can never get it out again!
Q: How did you get started?
A: I‘ve painted since I was a child. Once we moved overseas, I finally had the time and freedom to work on painting professionally.
Q: Did you go to school for art?
A: I had some schooling but mostly self-taught. I took a few workshops that really helped me with technique, and then at some point you have to explore and find your own voice.
Q: What do you love most about painting?
A: Painting keeps my mind busy and challenges me. I see a painting like a puzzle. Does this color work? How about this shape? This brush stroke? I love challenging myself with new color schemes and subjects for series.
Q: What inspires you?
A: I'm inspired by color and light. Nothing makes me happier than some luscious colors.
Q: What's next for Shelby Dillon Studios?
A: SSD has a super busy fall show schedule! We are working on more flowers and umbrellas, and developing a landscape series!
Q: Fav Raleigh restaurant?
A: Brewery Bhavana! Simple divine!
Q: Cant miss fall activity?
A: I love when the leaves are crisp, you have blue skies and you get to wear a jacket for the first time. That means it;s time to tailgate! I went to Tulane, so it's all about friends and fun!
Q: Best kept Raleigh secret?
A: Oooo I'm just learning Raleigh, and falling in love with it. Why don't ya'll tell me your favorite secrets!
A Note From Rachael:
I chose to feature Shelby Dillon because of her whimsical take on everyday objects. I love the colors she chooses, I wouldn't come up with her selections on my own and that's exciting. She highlights characters us Southern Women are drawn to, the Cows we had last Christmas flew out of here because they had so much personality. I also love that Shelby is originally from Hilton Head Island. I grew up spending summers there, and it was so rare to meet locals who weren't much older than me. I like to think had we met back in the day, we would have been friends. I'm so thankful we get to continue featuring Shelby's work in the store, each month when she drops off something new, I get giddy.
